Being a disciple of Jesus Christ

By Louis Michel Adjeme 3 min read

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ

1. Commitment to Jesus' teachings

A disciple is someone who learns from Jesus and holds to His teachings. That means studying the Bible to understand His words and apply them in daily life. Jesus stressed obedience to His teachings as the mark of a true disciple in John 8:31, where He says: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.”

2. Life transformation

Discipleship involves a transformation that affects a person's values, priorities and actions. It means allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds and hearts, making us more like Jesus in our character and in our relationship with God and others. Paul describes this process in Romans 12:2, urging believers not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds.

3. Relationship with Jesus

Being a disciple means having a personal relationship with Jesus, marked by love, trust and continual communication through prayer. It means knowing Jesus intimately and experiencing and manifesting His life and nature in every area of life. In John 15:4, Jesus invites His disciples to remain in Him, stressing the importance of a close and lasting relationship.

4. Mission and witness

Disciples are called to take part in Jesus' mission by sharing the Gospel and making disciples of all nations, as commanded in Matthew 28:19-20. This involves both proclaiming the message of salvation and demonstrating Jesus' love and compassion through acts of service and kindness.

5. Community

Discipleship is not a solitary undertaking but is lived out within a community of believers. The early church in Acts 2:42-47 models this communal aspect of discipleship, showing how the first Christians devoted themselves together to teaching, fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer.

6. Willingness to bear a cost

Following Jesus may involve sacrifice and suffering. Jesus made it clear that discipleship requires denying ourselves, taking up our cross daily and following Him (Luke 9:23). Disciples are those who are ready to face hardship and even persecution for Christ.

7. Love and service

A disciple imitates Jesus' serving love, caring for others and putting their needs before their own. Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are to love God with all our heart, all our soul and all our mind, and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39).
In short, being a disciple of Jesus Christ means committing to a journey of faith, transformation and lifelong service, rooted in a deep relationship with Him. It means following Jesus in every area of life, becoming more like Him and taking part in His mission in the world.
